Soldier and Author

It is not uncommon to find that soldiers are also authors and poets and one such example is retired Brigadier General Tannous Mouawad.

The General who has had a distinguished public life also writes both non-fiction and fiction books. He is a well-known figure both in Zgharta and also in the Lebanese media who often call upon him for his comments on military and security issues.

The photograph shows Tannous, seated, signing copies of his novel “ Les dieux et les éditeurs", at the “Lire en Français et en Musique” on 17th November 2005. His sister, Mrs Ibtihaj Mouawad, is in the background.

Rotary Club of Zgharta Zawie

As part of a series of article featuring organisations and institutions of Zgharta Zawie we feature today the Rotary Club of Zgharta Zawie.

The Club was formally founded on 26th January 1984 and the name was chosen specifically to reflect its aim to bring the whole community and the villages of Zgharta Zawie together. Its official Rotary club number is 21566. As our reports of its activities show the Club plays an important role in the life of Zgharta Zawie.

Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional people whose stated aim is to provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

The name "Rotary" derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices.

Sana Abi Dib: Woman of many roles

Sana Abi Dib is a well-known figure in environmental circles both in Zgharta Zawie and Lebanon, so we wanted to find out more about her.

Readers will recall her name when we reported the events of the Biiyat as part of the winter and Summer Ehdeniyat, 2004 & 2005.

Her time is full these days combining being a new mother as well as being Professor of Environment Courses at St Joseph University at its faculties in Beirut, Sidon and Tripoli, completing her PhD thesis on forest management in Lebanon, heading the Al Midan NGO Environmental Executive Board, organizing environmental activities and projects, and acting as a biodiversity consultant at the Institute of Environmental Studies at the University of Balamand.

Raskifa famous son to be honoured

Once again we are please to feature another famous son of Zgharta Zawie, this time of the village of Raskifa. He is the world-renowned immunologist/virologist, Professor Georges Bahr, who will be receiving on 25th November 2005 a special medal from the Raskifa Municipal Council and the Municipal Union of Zgharta Zawie. The occasion is to celebrate both the Professor’s lifetime achievements and the bestowing last month of the Laureate of the Euroscience 2004 Rammal Award.

The Professor told zgharta.com that he is looking forward to his visit to the village of his birth where he still has some relatives living there. He says that because of the pressures of modern day living he does not return as often as he would wish. As a young boy, he says, he never thought that one day his village would be holding a ceremony in his honour. It will be a very emotional day for him, he says.

Spotlight on Arbet Kozhaya

As part of an occasional series we spotlight, Arbet Kozhaya, one of the fifty-six towns and villages, which make up Zgharta Zawie.

The name of the village is called after the Monastery of Kozhaya, also known as the Monastery of St Anthony the Great (Mar Antonios al-Kabir). The monastery is some 950 metres above sea level in the Valley of Kozhaya. The word “Arbet” (Aarbet) means inclined, since the village is on an inclined plane overlooking Kozhaya.

Vera Farah: Zgharta Artist

One of most talked about “Al Koubra” events this summer was the exhibition of paintings by Vera Bou Tannous Farah. The exhibition was called “Lady of the Night” and consisted of twenty paintings of her most recent completed works.

Although we have included her for many years in our Artist section we though we should meet and find out more about her.

In our article on the life of Youssef Macary (1 Sept 05) we showed a old school photograph of his class taken in 1954 at St Joseph's School, Zgharta.

Youssef Macary (1938 – 1999)

As part of an occasional series of articles telling of the contemporary history of Zgharta Zawie and its people we feature the life of Youssef Boutros Selim Macary.

Youssef was born in Zgharta in 1938, the third of seven children. At the age of seventeen he set sail alone to Sao Paulo, Brazil to continue his education. Six years later he went to Connecticut, USA where he prospered and brought up his two sons with a strong belief in the power of education. In memory of their father the sons set up a scholarship to assist students of Lebanese descent in the USA.

Milad El Ghazal Mouawad

Zgharta.com expands network to Brazil

The aim of Zgharta.com is to bring the worldwide Zghartawien community together.

Zghartawiens are found on all continents where they have their own local communities, news, needs and indeed language. It is because of this that zgharta.com are creating sister sites. Such sites will focus more on the particular local community, it needs and it will be in the countries own language. It is recognised that English/American is not always the first or second language for many Zghartawiens.

Zghartawien: OMAR FRANGIÉ

As part of an occasional series of interviews with Zghartawiens we today feature television producer Omar Frangié. For a person who is only 25, he is to be admired and applauded for his contributions to the Zgharta Ehden community.

Omar was born in 1980; Zgharta and his proud parents are Sayed and Nazira neé Douaihy Frangié, who still live in Zgharta.

The popular Tripoli weekly newspaper, Tamadon, published on 1st April an article featuring zgharta.com. 

The article talks about the original idea of the web site - establishing links between the Zgharta Zawie community in Lebanon and the world ; how it was founded seven years ago and its development over the years.The article goes on to talk about the role the site has in Zgharta Zawie life - reporting local news, announcing activities of the locality and also of the Zgharta Ehden Municipality Council and the Parish of Ehden Zgharta and that it publishes the Parish magazine,Yanabih, online . It refers to instances where those living overseas ask for help to trace their family roots.

Institutions and Organisations of Zgharta Zawie

As part of an occasional series on the institutions and organisations of Zgharta Zawie we feature today the Institute of Saint Antoine.

The Institute is located at Khaldieh, which is some three kilometers from Zgharta and was established in 1991 by the Antonine Sisters. The Sisters work in such diversified fields as education, health, and social services in countries including Australia, Canada, France and the USA.

The aim of the Institute is to provide courses to those students who wish to have a vocational or technical education rather than an academic one.

Mothers Day

Today is the first day of spring and in Lebanon it is also Mothers Day.

In Lebanon it is a day when the themes of new life and motherhood are combined. Since the beginning of mankind spring has been associated with the start of life. Historians claim that the celebration of Mothers Day emerged from the annual spring festival of ancient Greece dedicated to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods.

Everyone knows from their own lives the role their mothers have played in it.

Zgharta.com SPECIAL: Ricardo Karam

We have said it before but it is worth saying again, that despite its size in world terms, those who come from or who have their roots in Zgharta Zawie, are found in all fields of life.

One such person is TV host, author and media personality Ricardo Karam. His face and name are familiar to millions of Lebanese and Arabs who watch him interviewing role models, politicians, tycoons and celebrities, as well as world-renowned famous people. He is widely publicised and is also known through his books not to mention newspapers and magazine articles.

Zgharta.com is very pleased that Ricardo has agreed to be the first Zghartawien interviewed as part of an occasional series of interviews.

Zgharta.com SPECIAL:The émigré and the painter

This is an article illustrating two favourite subjects of ours – our heritage and the lives of those who emigrated from Lebanon -, which are linked together here.

We have been talking to Maria Martha Nader who lives in Brazil and who is an admirer and collector of the paintings of Saliba Douaihy. Her interest arises from the friendship between her grandfather, Aziz Nader and Saliba. That friendship and her grandparent’s forebears and lives are the background of this article.
